Trader Joe's Lemon Heart Cookies: Front Packaging
Another visit around Trader Joe's led to another cookie discovery: Lemon Heart Cookies.
Trader Joe's Lemon Heart Cookies: Nutritional Infromation, Ingredients, and Description
The packing is interesting--clean and fancy--but the ingredients were also interesting. Almond meal? The enriched wheat flour could be swapped for a better ingredient, but considering the nature and pricing of the product, it's decent.
Trader Joe's Lemon Heart Cookies: Close-Up
Trader Joe's Lemon Heart Cookies were pleasant, and the description ("Delicately textured cookies with a hint of almond flavor and lemon icing") fit completely. The cookies could have been slightly moister (these were pretty dry), but were pleasantly sweet and lemony. By that, I mean that the cookies were not artificially lemony, but rather had a natural lemon flavor. The almond meal added additional texture, which I liked. I'd buy these again!

A small place amidst offices, by a pond with ducks swimming in the sun, kitchen busy to keep up with its loyal customers, and Mrs.Pookie flashing a smile at all her guests taking orders and serving the most delicious thai food in Westlake Village. That’s the Pookie’s Thai. The place was started 7 years ago and today its our favorite here in LA. The first thing you notice here is the way its hidden amongst offices at The Water Court. Next, the welcoming nature of the place makes you return every week!

Our favorite appetizer is ‘Kra Thong Thong’. Wonton cups filled with chicken, peas and carrots served with a hot n sweet sauce. It’s a great way to start your journey into the enticing flavors of Thailand.
Kra Thong Thong
Another popular appetizer is the Wow! Westlake Roll. It looks like salad wrapped in rolls. Tofu, cucumber, basil, cilantro, carrots wrapped in rice sheets and served with a special sauce. It’s a lovely combination that is so refreshing to the palate. The flavor of the basil simply pops out amongst the veggies dipped in the sauce.

To accompany your meal try thai iced tea. A pink drink with a hint of tea.

On weekdays you can have lunch specials with duck, beef, chicken, everything. But otherwise, here are a few that we relish. Spicy monsoon noodles are my choice for a nice hot and sweet delight. Made of flat noodles, basil, bell peppers, mushroom and beef, chicken or pork it was a splash of flavor for us in this monsoon weather.
Spicy Monsoon Noodles
Hi, Yo! Silver is a milder choice made of fried silver noodles, shrimp, chicken, sprouts, tomato and egg.
Hi, Yo! Silver
Now for the fun part. You must be knowing about the famous red and green curries of thai cuisine. Well here, its definitely the best. They are served with white or brown rice, and you cannot stop eating it. We got a special treat when we ordered the green curry last time. Its called jade curry here, and as you might know the curry is made of coconut milk. But what if it is served to you in a coconut itself with fresh coconut floating in the gravy!! Yumm.. I have had nothing so exotic and yummy!
Ruby Curry(red curry)

Jade Curry(green curry)
Now coming to the rice, my choice is Prapan’s rice. The rice is full of spice, meat, bell peppers, onions and loads of flavor. Try it with one of the curries, it is heavenly!!
Prapan's Rice
So the next time you go to this place, don’t be scared of trying anything, I guarantee everything is going to be superb!! Enjoy yourself!!

Maria's Italian Kitchen

To contact us Click HERE
Established in 1975 by Maria Alfano, this Italian Kitchen is a blessing to LA. The owners were actually from Hoboken, NJ, but then fell in love with CA on a visit, and opened Maria’s Italian Kitchen. It is now open in 10 different locations in and around LA, serving fresh pasta, breads, pizza, salad, and much more! Here are a few of their lip smacking dishes.            Like most Italian places Maria’s serve complimentary garlic bread. But these are not like any other you might have tasted. Drizzled with oregano and garlic and eaten with olive oil, the bread gives you an intro to what you are about to savor.
Garlic bread
Cheese fries
As appetizer we tried their formaggio fritti. We weren’t familiar with what to expect but once we tried it, I am sure its something we will always have! Formaggio is a chewy kind of cheese, which is fried with bread crumbs to make it a fritti. The portion had just two rectangular pieces served with fresh marinara sauce and arugula leaves. Oh! What do I tell you about the sauce!! It was the best I ever tasted. You can taste the freshness, the juiciness and the sweetness of the tomatoes and when combined with the frittas, the combo is heaven! We also had cheese fries. These potato fries were drizzled with cheese and had just the flavor to tell you they were different. Frankly, I wouldnt say they are great. They were well done, tasted good but not extraordinary.

Formaggio Fritti
For the main course, we tried three different varieties just to get the taste of the place. And oh! I forgot to mention, we had a guest this time. You will hear about her in the next few posts too, ‘cause we are having a holiday together. That is why we could try 3 entrees instead of just 2.                One of them was vegetarian lasagna. This lasagna had spinach, portabella mushrooms, grilled zucchini, smoked mozzarella and sautéed broccoli. And of course their fresh marinara too! It was such a mouthful, and so yummy, I am waiting to try it myself some day. It was a large portion though, so unless you are very hungry, you might end up with a doggy bag.

Vegetarian Lasagna
The other entrée was the Spicy shrimp and Roasted corn Risotto. For those who do not know, Risotto is simply rice cooked in broth of meat/ vegetable till it gets a creamy consistency and served with any kind of meat. The kind we tasted was accompanied by shrimp, corn, and red chilli flakes, sun-dried tomatoes and cream. It’s a treat for those who love seafood and its distinct flavor cause this dish is loaded with it!
Spicy Shrimp and roasted corn Risotto
The third was ravioli a la marinara. The description on the menu reads “Delicious paper thin pasta pillows of Ricotta stuffed pasta. Light and delicious” And yes, it was just that. Inspite of being just the basic Italian combination, it tasted so special on my palate when the ricotto just melted in my mouth blending with the marinara. Hmmmm… I need to have it right now! And since it was just the right portion, you can enjoy it all you want, just until you can. It wont get too much into you.
Ravioli a la Marinara
So maria’s Italian Kitchen is my best choice for fresh marinara, and cheese. I bet you will not leave unhappy after eating at this place! Enjoy yourselves….

Filippi's flips you over!

To contact us Click HERE

Famished after a day long stroll in the San diego zoo, we were hunting for some good italian food in Little Italy. We picked Filippi's Pizza Grotto. We are fanatics of italian food, so we were ready to dine in this famous italian deli cum restaurant. We were there on monday evening at 8:30pm, and we had to wait 25min to be seated! So you can imagine how popular it must be! They have other locations all around San diego, and stretching upto Napa too!

Waiting in line, and observing the deli around me, I counted more than 20 kinds of EVOO(Extra virgin Olive Oil), Wines from all over the world, including their own home brew France ca Chile Flippis. And cheese?? Dont ask me! I couldnt count them....Displayed in the counter, hanging on the counter, there was cheese everywhere! Of course, no italian store can not have pasta! There was loads and loads of pasta everywhere... It was a delight to see almost everything italian in the store.

Once you pass the deli and enter the restaurant you know they have been around for  a long long time. The place was full! Tables all over, waiters running all over, 'bottles' hanging from the ceiling everywhere! I later got to know they were bottles of Bell'agio Chianti dry red wine, ordered and autographed by their customers. This place was screaming, 'You are here for SOME experience'!!

We ordered some fresh garlic bread, and then binged into this cheezy, pizza surprise. It was the Vegetarian Special, with loads of cheese smothered all over, mushrooms, onions, tomato and black olives. Ingredients are not so appealing I know!( there was no chicken on the menu) But the pizza was certainly a mouthful.

After the pizza, we were ready for more. So we tried their Eggplant Parmigiana in the a la carte (smaller portion) with some lasagna. Yummm... it was perfecto! The pictures may not completely tell you how it tasted, but... neither can I! But if you are any where close to Little Italy in San Diego, do make sure you check out this place. The ambiance itself will bowl you over!

Walnut Leek and Herb Stuffed Pork Loin Roast with Maitre d' Hotel Butter Sauce

To contact us Click HERE

A nice tasting stuffed pork loin roast with a classic compound butter!
This style of meat fabrication was popular with a few great chefs of the 1980's.  When a pork loin roast or veal loin roast is prepared like this, the flavor of the stuffing infuses with the meat more thoroughly, because there is more contact area.  The stuffing keeps the meat tender and moist.     I have sold this stuffed pork loin entree in cafes for both lunch and dinner.  Customers like the way this entree looks.  Usually one chop is enough for a lunch portion or a petite dinner portion.  I have served this entree with a variety of sauces.  A light lemony compound butter like Maitre D' Hotel butter compliments the favors of the walnut herb stuffing in a nice way.  Walnut herb stuffing has a rich savory flavor that can be heavy on the palate, so a thin lemony butter sauce is a good choice.
Beurre Maitre D' Hotel:     This recipe makes enough for 6 to 8 compound butter pat portions!  Any extra can be chilled or frozen for later use.  A pat of maitre d' hotel butter can be placed on a steak or roasted meat of any kind.  This compound butter can also be whisked with a warm liquid to form a thin butter sauce.     Cut 4 ounces of unsalted plugra butter or regular unsalted butter into small chunks.     Add 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons of minced parsley.     Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice.     Add fine ground sea salt and black pepper.     Use a fork to thoroughly mash and mix the butter with the ingredients.     When the butter starts to soften, whisk the butter mixture till it becomes smooth and creamy.     Divide the the maitre d' hotel butter into large butter pat portions.     Chill the butter pats till they become firm.       Note:  For fancy maitre d' hotel butter pats, line a sheet pan with parchment paper.  Use a star tipped pastry bag to pipe butter pat portions on the parchment paper.  Chill the compound butter portions, till they become firm.
Walnut Herb Stuffing:     Heat a saute pan over medium low heat.       Add 4 pats of unsalted butter.     Add 1/4 cup of small chopped leek.     Add 1/4 cup of finely chopped white onion.     Add 1 minced garlic clove.     Gently saute and sweat the leek mixture, till the onions and leeks become translucent and tender.     Place the contents of the saute pan into a mixing bowl.     Add 1/3 cup of small chopped walnuts.     Add 1/2 cup of fine plain bread crumbs.     Add 2 tablespoons of minced Italian parsley.     Add 2 pinches of thyme.     Add 2 pinches of basil.     Add 2 pinches of marjoram.     Add 1 pinch of oregano.     Add 1 pinch of ground sage.     Add sea salt and black pepper.     Add 1 tablespoon of whisked egg.     Add just enough chicken broth to wet the mixture, so it becomes damp and moist.     Mix the ingredients together.      Chill the stuffing till it is needed.        Bone On Stuffed Pork Loin Roast Fabrication:     A 2 rib bone pork loin roast is good for 1 or 2 portions.  A boning knife is the best knife to use for this style of meat fabrication.      Trim the fat cap so only a thin layer remains, if a fat cap covers the pork loin section.     French the rib bones, so the bones are clean and bare.     On the bottom of the roast will be blade shaped pieces of back bone that are attached to the rib bones by cartilage.  Trim off the thin back bones.     Turn the roast upside down, so the rib bones are pointed at the cutting board.     Use a boning knife to start the two layering cuts!       The first cut should start at the bottom of the roast (which is now facing up), just before the area where the pork loin meat starts to curve to the top.  Cut a 1/2" thick layer of meat, from the start of the curve on the bottom of the roast, all the way around the roast to where the meat is attached to the rib bones on the top of the roast.     Turn the roast so the bones are facing up.     Lay the top layer of meat, that was just cut and is attached to the bone, over the rib bones, so it is out of the way of the second layering cut.     The round shaped eye of the loin that is attached to the bone is the next layering cut.     Start the cut where the eye of the loin is attached to the bone.  (Do not cut the meat free from the bone!  Leave the meat attached to the bone.)     Cut a 3/8" to 1/2" thick flat even long layer, by rolling the eye of the loin outward, while slowly cutting the even layer slice.     The roast should now look like two long evenly thick rectangle shaped flaps of meat, that run in opposite directions and the two flaps of meat are attached at the centrally located bone.
Applying The Stuffing:     Place a 3/8" thick even layer of the walnut herb stuffing on top of the second cut layer of pork loin meat.     Roll the meat back, so it forms a round shape and so it resembles is original shape.     Place a 3/8" thick even layer of the walnut herb stuffing on top of the first cut layer of pork loin meat.     Wrap the outer layer pork loin meat flap, around the stuffed round middle eye of the loin.     Gently press the the stuffed roast, so no loose spaces can be seen and so the stuffed coiled roast holds its shape.     Use butcher's string to truss the roast, so it hold its shape.
Walnut Leek and Herb Stuffed Pork Loin Roast:     Place the roast on a lightly oiled roasting pan, with the rib bones pointing up.     Brush the roast with melted unsalted butter.     Season the roast lightly with sea salt and black pepper.     Wrap the bones with aluminum foil.  (The foil will keep the bones from turning too dark!)     Slowly roast the stuffed pork loin roast in a 325 degree oven.     Baste the roast occasionally with melted unsalted butter.     When the roast becomes about 3/4's fully cooked, remove the protective aluminum foil and let the bones brown while the roast finishes baking.     The stuffed pork roast is fully cooked when the center temperature reaches 165 degrees for 15 seconds.  (Servesafe Standard safe temperature for stuffed meats)      Allow the roast to cool and rest for 3 to 4 minutes, before removing the trussing string.         Maitre D' Hotel Butter Sauce:     Wine cannot be used as a liquid, or this would no longer be a maitre d' hotel butter. Water should be used and it only takes a little bit of hot water in a sauce pot to do the trick!       Butter is a natural perfect emulsion.  Turning butter into a thin emulsion sauce is as easy as whisking butter with a small amount of hot liquid in a warm pan.  Do not overheat the butter sauce, or the natural emulsion will break!     Chop 1 1/2 to 2 ounces of the chilled maitre d' hotel butter into bean size nuggets and chill them in a refrigerator.     Heat a small sauce pot over medium heat.     Add 1 tablespoon of water.     As soon as the small amount of water starts to boil, reduce the temperature to very low heat.     Immediately add a few bunches of chilled maitre d' hotel butter nuggets at a time, while constantly whisking, till a creamy thin butter sauce starts to form.     Remove the pan from the heat.       Continue adding the rest of the maitre d' hotel butter nuggets, while constantly whisking, till a thin butter sauce forms.  The butter sauce should look almost like a beurre blanc.     Set the butter sauce on a stove top away from any heat and stir it occasionally.
Walnut Leek and Herb Stuffed Pork Loin Roast with Maitre d' Hotel Butter Sauce:     Cut the Walnut Leek and Herb Stuffed Pork Loin Roast in half between the bones.     Place the two halves of the roast on a plate with the sliced side facing up.     Spoon the Maitre d' Hotel Butter Sauce on the plate around the stuffed pork loin roast.     Garnish with sprigs of Italian parsley.
This is a nice plate of food!  The flavors go well together.  The roasted pork is moist and tender.  This is a very nice recipe for the fall season!     Parsley sprigs as a garnish may seem antique to some chefs.  Useless inedible garnishes really do not belong on plates by fine dining standards.  Parsley is useful and medicinal!  Parsley is a natural breath freshener and it aids digestion when eating a meat rich diet.  Parsley is not a useless inedible garnish by any means and it does look good on a plate.  Especially Italian parsley!  Yum!  ...  Shawna

Pawn Stars

Pork Chop and 3 Eggs with Hash Browns special at the old fashioned soda fountain counter!
Las Vegas Boulevard from Fremont Street to Main Street by the Stratosphere Casino is an interesting area, to say the least!  It is kind of like a journey through Las Vegas past, present and future. There is plenty of fun shopping, nice old restaurants, motels, bars, tattoo shops and wedding chapels.  This area borders the fine arts district of Las Vegas where the monthly First Friday event is held.  By day, the old Strip looks tame and docile.  By night, the glow of neon lights and party people turn this end of the Strip into an adventurous staggering evening stroll!     Las Vegas is the wedding capitol of the world.  There are hundreds of wedding chapels in the Las Vegas Valley.  There are many different themes of wedding chapels.  Some are quaint, reverent and traditional.  Some offer package deal weddings with all the amenities.  There are several wedding chapels on the strip where the stars have been wed.  Even if the star's wedlock lasted only lasted two days, it is still a claim to fame for a chapel.     Theme weddings are a popular way to join in holy matrimony!  Star Trek theme wedding, caveman weddings, kinky leather weddings, cowboy western weddings, knight and damsel weddings and Elvis weddings are just a few of the wedding themes to chose from.  Basically, any wedding theme that you can dream of can be catered to in Las Vegas at wedding chapels that specialize in theme weddings!  One chapel specializes in rock n roll Elvis Presley weddings and couples are wed by Elvis the King!     The pawn shop tour of Las Vegas is extensive.  There are hundreds of pawn shops in the Las Vegas Valley.  As you can imagine, there are bargains to be found in these shops.  Price haggering is part of getting a bargain.       The famous pawn shop that is featured in the television show "Pawn Stars" is located on this section of Las Vegas Boulevard.  Ever since that pawn shop became famous, there has been a waiting line of people to get in.  Sometimes the waiting line is a block long!  You can see the line in one of the photographs above.  The "Pawn Stars" pawn shop has turned into a prime attraction and taxi cabs even form a line there to catch fares.       The area near the "Pawn Stars" pawn shop has a few other interesting shops to check out.  Lost Vegas Antiques is one of the most interesting antique and memorabilia shops in the Las Vegas Valley!  The store is loaded with items from Las Vegas past.  Old signs, chips, ashtrays, collectibles and advertisements from the long gone casinos of old Las Vegas can be found at this store.  Autographed pictures of the stars of the past and old brothel advertisements are on the shelves.  Nearly anything from Las Vegas past can be found in Lost Vegas Antiques!     Next door to Lost Vegas Antiques is Showgirls.  Showgirls is an adult video arcade with dancers and it is not exactly a place for children.  Showgirls has been known for marketing unusual items from the adult film industry.  I figured that I would stop by to see what kind of odd items that they were marketing at this time.  I walked into a comically situation where the cash register clerk was county out 50 one dollar bills to a customer loudly and one at a time, like it was the biggest deal of a lifetime for the customer!  I just laughed!  Showmanship is always a good thing!     The odd adult film industry items that Showgirls was marketing at this time were signed walk of fame concrete sidewalk hand impressions of porn stars.  The funny part was, the hands were not the only impressions on the concrete slabs.  Boob impressions, butt impressions and genital impressions were on each of the autographed porn star walk of fame concrete sidewalk slabs!  Of course I asked the clerk if I could take pictures of just the porn star slabs for a blog article I was writing.  The clerk smiled and we had a fun conversation.  Business people like opportunities for public mention and free advertising, so my visit was appreciated.       The autographed porn star walk of fame concrete slab impressions are collectors items.  Just cover your eyes if the photographs offend you in any way!  This is Las Vegas and Las Vegas is adult fantasyland, so items like this are normal to us local folks!     Every city has a town hall.  Every American knows what I mean by a "Town Hall."  A long counter at a diner or soda fountain is commonly referred to as the town hall!  People order food, sip coffee, read the newspaper and talk about local happenings, local politics and sports gambling odds in an editorialized fashion.  Yes, sports gambling odds are part of soda fountain counter town hall meetings in Las Vegas!    The old town hall of this section of the Las Vegas Strip is Tiffany's Cafe - 24 Hour Fountain and Grill at the old White Cross drug store.  In the old days, nearly every drug store had a fountain and grill.  Soda jerks used to tend the counter in the old days and a chocolate malt was a big selling item that they made.  Burgers, sandwiches, fries, sundaes and breakfast was offered at nearly every fountain and grill.  Tiffany's Cafe is a famous fountain and grill from the past that still doing business in the present day and age!     Tiffany's Cafe at the White Cross offers a standard fountain and grill menu.  The grill menu is like old fashioned traditional diner menus.  Everything from liver and onions to a club sandwich is offered.  The fountain menu offers hand scooped ice cream specialties, floats, milkshakes and malts.  The items on the menu are not the only offerings at Tiffany's Cafe.  There are special du jour signs tacked on the wall that offer some very nice items for a fair price.  I saw the sign for pork chop and 3 eggs any style with hash browns and toast on the wall for a nice price, so I sat the menu down and ordered the special!  Pork chop n eggs is one of my favorite breakfast entrees!     While sitting at a fountain and grill counter, a customer has full view of everything going on the other side of the counter.  The grill station is right within plain view and you can watch your food being cooked.  The drama behind the counter is part of the entertainment.  Usually a fountain and grill has very experienced diner waitresses that have all the patience in the world, so the waitresses tend to be the stable peacekeepers of the other side of the counter.       The cook at Tiffany's Cafe was new to the game.  In fact, it was his first day on the job and he had never cooked in a restaurant before.  The guy was a good cook and he made a few mistakes like first timers do.  The waitress patiently asked for food to be recooked a few times and the cook corrected his mistakes after putting up a little struggle.       The new cook struck up a little conversation with me and I told him that I was a long time chef.  He instantly gave me respect and listened to a little advice.  I just said "focus on the task at hand, stay organized and don't get caught up in the drama head game of the job."  The cook knew what I was saying!  I congratulated the cook on a job well done and said that he was a naturally good cook.  A compliment is always a good thing for any cook on their first day, no matter how good or bad things are going.  A compliment to a new cook pops the cook's balloon of wondering about whether the work he is doing is up to standard.  A cook that is preoccupied with thinking about negative things, usually gets into a negative mood.  One little compliment is like a breath of fresh air!     The pork chop and eggs were as good as any that I have had in the past at diners anywhere!  For a first day cook, the guy did a nice job.  The pork chop tasted great!  The eggs were over medium as requested and the plate was full.  Tiffany's Cafe at the White Cross is known for old fashioned full plates of food.       After that big breakfast at 3:00PM on a Saturday afternoon my belly was full!  I had dinner plans later in the evening, but I was still stuffed, so I cancelled the dinner idea.  Breakfast in the afternoon is a common thing in Las Vegas.  People who work at night or party all night do not keep a 9 to 5 hour routine.     I enjoyed my afternoon of strolling around this old section of the Las Vegas Strip.  The service and the food at Tiffany's Cafe was great!  It is plain simple diner style food and the plate is full.       Tiffany's Cafe - 24 Hour Fountain and Grill is located on the Las Vegas Strip at the intersection of Oakey, close to the Stratosphere Casino Resort.  Just look for the White Cross drug store sign.  The White Cross drug store is closed and the closure happened recently.  People were sadly talking about the end of Tiffany's Cafe around town, but much to the relief, Tiffany's stayed open for business after the White Cross closed.       I recommend Tiffany's Cafe - 24 Hour Fountain and Grill for locals and visitors of Las Vegas!  Tiffany's Cafe is one of the old fashioned charms of Las Vegas and it is a good place to grab a plate of old fashioned diner food while walking around in this area of the old Las Vegas Strip.  Yum!  ...  Shawna
