Winter in Venice is a holiday show that is hosted by the Venetian Casino Resort in Las Vegas.  The Winter in Venice show is something that must be experienced to be believed.  The show symbolizes the coming of winter and the holiday season in a dreamlike way.  Venice Italy has its own style of classic minstrel show and opera tradition that dates back many centuries.  This classic Italian theatrical style is very well expressed in the Winter in Venice show.
Winter in Venice runs nightly till a few days after the Christmas holiday.  This show is a must see, for both visitors of Las Vegas and locals.  The best part about the Winter in Venice show is that the price of admission is free!  Winter in Venice is one of the best complimentary holiday season shows in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas casino resorts spare no expenses, when it comes to seasonal decorations and complimentary shows.  Every resort in Las Vegas offers spectacular holiday season theme displays this time of year.
The Venetian Grande Canal Shops is not like any mall that you may have ever dreamed of.  The indoor architecture is designed to look like Venice Italy.  Canals run through the Grand Canal Shops and romantic Italian gondolas float through the mall in the canals!  The gondolas are up for, hire for a small fee.  Yes, the gondoliers do sing romantic Italian songs!
Las Vegas is the marriage capitol of the world, so a romantic Venetian gondola ride fits right in with the overall theme of Las Vegas.  There are plenty of fine restaurants in the Grand Canal Shops to chose from, for a romantic evening of fine dining.  There are plenty of trendy quality stores and there is great fashion shopping at the Canal Shops too.
The Palazzo Casino Resort is located next to the Venetian property and the Sands Expo convention Center.  The Palazzo is owned by the same company as the Venetian.  The Palazzo actually flows into the Venetian property and the Palazzo can be accessed by strolling through the Venetian Grand Canal Shops.
As the Grand Canal Shops approach the Palazzo, the theme changes to a modern Italian style of architecture.  Entering the Shoppes at Palazzo is an experience in itself!  The photographs of the holiday season white peacocks were taken in the Shoppes at Palazzo.  While I was visiting the Shoppes at Palazzo, a formal wine tasting event was taking place.  Many people picture Las Vegas as being a mecca of gambling and sin, but Las Vegas truly is one of the great cultural centers of the world.  After looking at the pictures in this blog article, I am sure that you would agree.
Just before the Winter in Vegas show started, I had to decide on where to have a bite to eat, so that I could tie the seasonal show and holiday decorations into a food article.  After all, the theme of this blog is food!  Great food is easy to find in the Venetian and the Palazzo.  Many famous chefs have signature restaurants at these two resorts.  There are casual restaurants and formal fine dining restaurants.  Nearly all of the restaurants have an Italian theme.
I had eaten a couple of small meals earlier on the Saturday that I visited the Venetian, so I was not hungry for a full course meal.  Walking by the Tintoretto Bakery in the Grand Canal Shops on the way to the show, I notices the customers who were sitting at tables outside of the bakery were munching away on pizza.  Pizza sounded like a good idea!  There is always room for a slice or two of good Italian pizza.
After entering the Tintoretto Bakery, my pizza mission was aborted!  Pizza mission override was in effect.  I saw display case, after display case, of the finest Italian desserts, gelato and baked goods that I have seen in a very long time.  Desserts!  Yes, I accepted my new mission of having dessert at the Tintoretto Bakery in the Venetian instead of eating pizza, before the Winter in Venice show started.  The first obstacle was trying to decide on which dessert to order.  It was painstakingly hard to make a decision, because all of the dessert items looked so good.
Finally after nearly five minutes, I felt the pressure of having to make a decision, or miss the beginning of the show.  Rum Baba was a dessert that I have not had in a long time, so a rum baba was my final choice.  Rum baba is not an Italian dessert, but it is a popular dessert in Italy.  About 20 years ago, I worked in a couple of fine Italian restaurants that had rum baba on the menu.
Rum baba originated in Poland and French chefs adopted the recipe.  Rum baba became a favorite dessert of european royalty.  Royal visits to Venice and Naples Italy were par for the course in early 1800's, so rum baba made its way into the repertoire of Italian chefs.  Naples is recognized as being the first place that Rum baba was served in Italy.
Rum baba is a yeast cake that is saturated with rum and rum soaked fruit or dried fruit.  Chantilly cream or flavored whipped cream is usually part of the modern recipe.  Sometimes, a puff of pate choux also garnishes a rum baba.
Rum baba is one of the great classic desserts and the rum baba at the Tintoretto Bakery was certainly a classic!  The flavor of rum saturated cake and fruit is captivating.  The cake was very light textured and not heavy at all.  The cream topping had a wisp of sweet rum flavor.  The rum baba was light and delicious.  The presentation was modern and nice.  Rum baba was the perfect light dessert to have, before viewing the Winter in Venice show in the courtyard, from the royal balcony at the Venetian Casino Resort!
I highly recommend desserts at the Tintoretto Bakery in the Venetian Grand Canal Shops!  I also recommend seeing the Winter in Venice show during this holiday season!  A visit to the Venetian and Palazzo this time of year will provide nice memories that will last a lifetime.  Yum!  ...  Shawna
